Tillie is a quiet 10 year old Jack Russell x Collie x Whippet girl who is in an Oldies Club foster home in Calne, Wiltshire.

Tillie - JRT X Collie (Wiltshire) Tillieoc

It took about a week for Tillie to build her confidence after the move to her foster home and about another week to be quite ‘at home’ there. She was reluctant to eat for the first two days and seemed unsure of people, but she connected with her female fosterer almost immediately.

After three days in her foster home, Tillie took herself off for something of an adventure. She escaped from the garden by jumping the fence and went on a trip to the local town. She was obviously keen to find out more about her new surroundings! Much desperate searching ensued and we heard of sightings from a number of people who saw her walking the streets, and she spent the night in the open. But clever Tillie took herself back the next day, tired but none the worse for her adventure.

Her fosterers tell us: The amazing thing is that she had only been with us for three days when she escaped, but she made a round trip of around 12 miles to get back to us. Not bad for a dog which did not really know us or know the local area at all and had never seen the area that she covered before.

The moral to this is that the new family will all need to gain her trust and make her feel secure before she will open up and settle down with every member of a new family. She can hide any anxiety quite well and react differently with each family member. And, of course, Tillie will need a very secure garden in her new home.

Tillie is a cute, well-behaved girl who is happy to be left alone for up to four hours. She’s great with other dogs and is currently staying with three labradors. She has seen cats at the vet and was OK with them. She is generally fine with most animals but she might give chase if something ran past. Tillie lived with three small children in her original home so she should be OK with children in her new home. She is very quiet and a bit timid though so she needs gentle treatment with people being careful to not spook her.

Her foster carers tell us: She loves to go out for walks and is good on the lead. Her recall is OK around the house, but we have not tested this outside since her escape from our garden, although she comes to her name immediately when on an extendable lead. Tillie loves walks and outings in the car. She is happy in the car provided that she can see out of the window. Sometimes she likes to play with ball, but this does not last long. We suspect that she would play more if she knew how to! She likes to sit and watch the world go by, or to cuddle up and be close to you.

Tillie is a loving girl who prefers female company and can be wary of men on first meeting. However she is good with all people once they have gained her trust. She is now OK with both foster carers but it took her some time to bond with both of them. She’ll make a lovely dog for a couple or family that can offer her plenty of affection, walks, and play. She will need a secure garden in which to play and for her new family to gain her trust.

Tillie can be a bit fussy with food but is getting better. She prefers a wet food but has recently started to eat biscuits as well. During her first week she didn’t always ask to go outside when she needed to, so her foster carers now ensure that she goes outside regularly and always after a meal – she virtually goes to the toilet on command!

Tillie has been vet-checked since coming into our care and she is in good condition with good teeth and a glossy coat. She is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated.

Her foster carers sum her up as follows: Tillie is a delight and would make someone or a family a wonderful companion dog. She has an eye open to all that is going on around her – alert and curious to her world. A quiet dog that is just happy to be with you.
