Gorgeous George (Oldies Club)
George is a cheeky 8 year old Boxer boy who came into Oldies Club care when his owner was sadly no longer able to look after him. He is in an Oldies Club foster home in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, waiting for the offer of a permanent home.
It took George a couple of days to feel at home with his foster family, but after only a week he really had his paws under the table!
There are 3 and 5 year old children in his foster home who love George and he behaves well with them. He can get boisterous and a bit bouncy though so you would need to be careful with smaller children in case he accidentally knocked them over.
George’s previous owner told us that he used to live with a cat so, assuming this is correct, he would probably be able to live with a cat again, provided he has given proper, careful introductions. He’s getting on well with the resident Tibetan Terrier in his foster home. They settled together after just a few days, with just the odd grumble during the settling-in period. However, George doesn’t seem to like larger dogs and so his foster carers only let him off lead in areas where there are no other dogs around.
George is an adorable lad who can happily be left for 3 or 4 hours without a problem. His foster carers don’t let him go upstairs when they’re out though as he sleeps on the bed and barks at the window if anyone goes past! George arrived with a harness but he pulls when he is walked on that so his foster carer has been using a halti, which has made a huge difference. He now walks much better although every now and then he tries to get it off!
He does have some recall but it would be better if it could be improved because, although he doesn’t go far from you, he doesn’t come back quickly if you need him to which could be a problem as he has fear aggression towards large breeds of dog. His foster carers have been using double lead — one attached to his collar and one attached to the halti — as he did get off his halti once to make an aggressive approach to an Akita. He has also gone for a Retriever when off the lead before his foster carers realised there was an issue. He obviously therefore needs careful handling when out and about as there is something in his past that is making him fear aggressive towards larger dogs. His new owner must be prepared to work on this and provide careful training.
George loves travelling in the car. He jumps in as soon as the boot or door is open and he shows no signs of travel sickness. He is a very playful boy who bouces around like a puppy with his ball. He also likes swimming and goes in any water he can. He loves to be fussed and loves his food and nice snooze!
George’s ideal home would be a reasonably active, dog-experienced family home as he really loves children and is enjoying being part of the family. He is a bit insecure though so wants lots of fusses. He is still quite active so will need regular exercise. He needs experienced owners as, if you give him an inch, he will take a mile. He is quite cheeky so needs to know who is boss!
George has his full tail. He is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated. George had an operation on a snapped ligament in his back left leg a few years ago, which although has healed fine, appears to have left him with arthritis in that leg. If he has too much exercise, he limps badly and drags it up the stairs. So his exercise needs to be carefully monitored — regular exercise but not too much. The vet has put him on Metacam daily at the moment and he is having a joint supplement in his meals — a senior kibble diet. He also wears a magnetic collar, all of which will hopefully help him.
George can be summed up with the words: nosey, loveable, bouncy and daft! And when we asked George’s foster carers for anything else they wanted to tell us about him for his website write-up, they simply said: “We Love Him!!”
