Buttons - Blind Springer Spaniel (Milton Keynes, Bucks)
Buttons is a 14 year old Springer Spaniel boy who came into Oldies Club care when his owners moved to accommodation where dogs weren’t allowed. Buttons is now in an Oldies Club foster home in High Wycombe, Bucks, waiting for someone to offer him a permanent home.
Settled quickly: Despite being virtually blind, Buttons found his way around his foster carers’ house quite easily and had no issues with her dogs. He did become very attached to his foster carer, following her everywhere, but after about 3 weeks this is easing off slightly. Buttons is happy to be left for up to 5 hours with no problems.
Great with dogs; Said to be good with cats: Buttons is very good with other dogs – he gets on well with his foster carer’s two dogs and loves to lick their other Springer – however the object of Buttons’ affection isn’t too keen on this! There are no cats at his foster home but we were told by Buttons’ previous owner that he has lived with cats in the past and is fine with them. We were also told that he was used to chickens and geese.
Could live with children of 8 years plus: Buttons is fine with children but he would be best with children of 8+ years old who will understand the needs of a blind dog and will give him quiet time when he needs it.
Enjoys walks; Good in the car: Buttons is very good on walks. You need to guide him near curbs and small walls so that he doesn’t trip up or bump himself, as he struggles to see them. He likes to have a run around the park but you have to stay close by as he cannot always hear you. He runs round trying to find you with his tail wagging and is so excited when he has! In some situations, it will be safest to keep him on an extender lead. Buttons is very good in the car.
Buttons’ likes and dislikes: His foster carer tells us “Buttons loves to just be around us – he also loves sleeping in our room! We haven’t come across anything that he is frightened of — considering he can’t see very well, he is very trusting with everything around him. He has got very attached to me to the point where he has to sleep in our room as he will whine and bark at the door otherwise. With time and patience this habit could be broken (he may have done this in his previous home). He also follows me everywhere and panics slightly if he can’t find me. This is getting slightly better over time, and he is fine when we go out — he just gets very excited when we come back!”
Buttons’ perfect home: Buttons would suit a home with people around for a fair portion of the day as he loves being with you, but he is happy to be left for a few hours. His new people will need to be patient with him initially as he may take time to settle to new surroundings and new people. He is not a demanding dog, is very well behaved, and is happy with one walk a day. He would settle with another calm dog as he loves his foster carer’s Springer and would love to snuggle up with him — unfortunately he is not so loving as Buttons!
Health notes: Buttons is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. He is virtually blind with cataracts — he can see shapes and outlines but he does occasionally walk into things. His hearing is not as good as it probably used to be and his back legs are a bit stiff. He also has a large cyst on his lower back. We were told this has been removed twice but, as it is in a hair follicle, it keeps growing back. He also has a couple of other small lumps. The vet wasn’t too worried and said to just to keep an eye on him.
Foster carer’s summary of Buttons: He is loving, happy, very good natured and well behaved. Buttons is an adorable Springer and he has adapted very well to his new environment with us. He is an impeccable house guest and he deserves a loving home where people will have the time to devote to him and he will reward them with being a lovely companion.
