Sam - 13.5 year old JRT X (Suffolk)
Sam is a Jack Russell Terrier cross and he’s 13 years and 6 months old. He’s currently in an Oldies Club foster home in Beccles, Suffolk and he’s hoping to hear from anyone who would like to offer him a new home.
Settled in well: It took Sam nearly a week to settle into his new foster home. He had previously moved from his original home to live with a family member, but was then taken into kennels for a period of time. Before being collected by his Oldies Club foster carer he spent a few hours back with his original owner, so considering all the upheaval he has experienced, we think he has adapted very well.
Happy to be left: Sam is very content to be left home alone for reasonable periods of time. He’ll just find himself a comfortable spot and have a nice, long snooze until you get home.
Can live with cats and dogs: Sam shares his foster home with a cat and another dog. He ignores the cat and gets along well with his foster carer’s mini Daschund, Penny. When he meets other dogs out and about, Sam is very friendly with them. If they get too boisterous with him he will tell them off, but he’s not at all aggressive. He would be happy living with a cat or another calm, easy going dog like himself.
Can live with older, sensible children: Sam recently went on a camping weekend with his foster family and really enjoyed running around the field with a friend’s seven year old boy. He’s very good with children because he’s calm and patient and will make a fuss without getting boisterous or jumping up. Sam would be suitable for a family with children, but because his eyesight and hearing aren’t so good, he would probably appreciate older children (10 years +) who will be sensitive to his needs.
Loves his walks: Sam enjoys his walks and has a bit of a spring in his step. He’ll soon be off at a trotting pace if you let him, but he also enjoys having a good old sniff. At the moment he is walked on an extendable lead and hasn’t been let off-lead. Provided you can get his attention he will come back, but care needs to be taken because of his poor hearing.
Good in the car: Sam will make a great travelling companion because he’s very good in the car. He likes to have a look out of the window to see where he’s going or he’ll cuddle up to anyone who is available.
Favourite pastimes: Sam’s still an active boy for a 13 year old and he loves his walks or playing chase with his ball. He has a healthy appetite and enjoys his food, but doesn’t raid your bins. A nice long snuggle on the sofa is also very much appreciated.
Sam’s dislikes: Sam doesn’t like stairs, although he can manage a couple of steps. He also gets a little nervous if you touch his feet or pick him up, but he doesn’t show any signs of aggression.
Sam’s perfect home: Sam enjoys company so would appreciate a home with someone who will be around for some of the day, although he’s not a demanding dog. He’d like a fairly active home where he’ll get regular walks and access to a garden and although he likes everyone, he does seem to prefer the company of men. He would welcome visiting young children and wouldn’t mind living with older, sensible ones. Oh.. and he likes to share your bed if you’ll let him please!
Health notes: Apart from a few fatty lumps and small warts, Sam has no obvious health problems. He was lame when he first arrived in his foster home and this was treated as an infection, but could have been caused by spending time in kennels. Sam doesn’t have very good hearing and his eyesight isn’t great.
Sam is neutered, microchipped, fully vaccinated and has been flea and worm treated.
Foster carer’s summary: Sam is a fantastic dog. He is a real companion and loves to be with you wherever you are, but he’s not in your face demanding attention all the time. He takes life as it comes and he loves a walk, but doesn’t play up if he doesn’t get one. He’s a very calm, unassuming and gentle boy, but still has plenty of energy. A perfect little companion and I love having him here!
