Benson - Springer Spaniel (Bucks)

This lovely handsome boy is Benson and he’s an adorable 13 year old Springer Spaniel. He is currently in an Oldies Club foster home in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire and is waiting for someone to offer him a permanent home.

Settled in quickly: When he first arrived in his foster home, Benson was afraid of the resident dogs and wanted to avoid them. However, after just a couple of hours, he realised that they were calm and laid back and was fine with them. He seems to be wary of anything new, but adjusts very quickly.

Good in the home: Benson is clean in the home and only had a couple of accidents to begin with whilst learning his new routine. He has been left at home in the company of other dogs and seems to be fine, but probably wouldn’t want to be left any longer than four hours at a time. He likes to sleep upstairs with you, but is happy to snooze in his own bed.

Loves his food: Benson’s favourite times of day are breakfast and dinner times! He doesn’t like another dog to approach him whilst he’s eating and will growl at them, so if he were to live with another dog in his new home there would need to be some supervision at mealtimes. However, Benson doesn’t mind people taking food away from him.



Could live with another calm dog: Benson can be a little unsure of other dogs he meets and sometimes cowers away from them. He should be fine living with another calm and laid back dog provided he could have a gentle introduction first.

Could live with a dog-savvy cat: Benson finds it exciting to chase any cats that run away from him, but he means no harm and will back off if they stand their ground. He could therefore live with a confident cat that has been used to the company of dogs.

Could live with older children: Benson has been okay with the children he’s met so far, but he can be nervous of people approaching him too quickly. It would therefore be unfair to expect him to live with young children who could easily forget his sensitivities. A home with a family who have children aged 10 years or over should be fine.



Loves his walks and is still active: No-one seems to have told Benson that he’s 13! He loves his walks and is still quite active for his age. He does occasionally pull on his lead, but is learning quickly. He can’t be let off-lead because his hearing isn’t too good so he doesn’t have any recall, but he would be fine in a secure area or on an extendable lead. Enjoys travelling: Benson loves to travel in the car. He settles down quickly and will occasionally sit up for a peek out of the window.

Benson’s dislikes: Until he trusts you, Benson isn’t keen on being groomed and will shake and try to move away. With a little time, patience and a few treats, this should easily be overcome.

Benson’s perfect home: Benson would love to live in a calm household where he could have a nice soft bed or sofa to sleep on. He loves his walks so would enjoy getting out for a couple of walkies everyday. He’s not interested in toys, but does enjoy some gentle fuss.

Foster carer’s summary: Benson’s foster carer describes him as a real cutie! He’s gentle, kind and smart and will sit and give you his paw (if you have food, he’ll give you his paw without you asking for it!). He’s also started learning a few new basic commands.

Health notes: Benson is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. He has a couple of harmless lumps and has recently had a dental and two teeth removed. He has mild hip dysplasia and although this doesn’t seem to bother him too much, he is trying Metacam for a trial period.
