Harvey is a 7 year old Border Collie who came into Oldies Club care with another collie, Rowen. We have decided to rehome them separately as Rowen is much older than Harvey and the two of them aren’t at all bonded and can be jealous of one another. Harvey is in an Oldies Club foster home between Lancaster and Carlisle, in Cumbria.

Settled quickly and can be left: Harvey settled in straight away and is happy to be left for a few hours.

Sometimes wary of dogs: Harvey is generally fine with Rowen, but he can be unpredictable with other dogs. He’d therefore probably be best as the only dog in his new home.

Good with cats: Harvey used to live with 5 cats. He’s fine with new cats once he’s got to know them.

Wary of some children: Harvey sometimes barks at children, particularly if they are on bikes. He would be best in a home where any children are teenagers.

Enjoys his walks: Harvey is a young oldie and enjoys his walks. He’ll pull on the lead at first due to excitement but when told to stop he will sit. He doesn’t really pull after he’s had a run. His recall is quite good but he sometimes doesn’t want to return if he’s busy playing!

Excellent in the car: Harvey is a very good boy in the car.

Harvey’s favourite pastimes: He loves to play with balls and branches – his foster carer reminds us to take care when dogs enjoy playing with bits of tree, due to possibility of injury – stick in throat!!

Harvey’s dislikes: Harvey is wary of some men and people wearing glasses and will bark at them. He was also terrified at the vet and tried to defend himself when his foster carer’s vet attempted to examine him. It would be great if, in his new home, he can be gradually introduced to his new vet surgery to help him get over his fears.

Harvey’s perfect home: Harvey would be best in a collie-experienced, adult home, with a nice garden for him to play in. He’d love to be with people who will take him for good walks and play ball with him.

Health notes: Harvey will be neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated prior to rehoming. He has no health problems. Harvey is overweight but he just needs a sensible diet and regular exercise in order to regain his figure.

Foster carer’s summary: Harvey is affectionate, responsive, intelligent and well-behaved. Harvey is very good around the house; he responds well to commands and sleeps through the night. Outside he enjoys sniffing the environment and isn’t quite as responsive! He’s a friendly boy who wants affection from everyone he meets, but he doesn’t jump up. The only negative thing about Harvey is that he has an unpredictable response to some men and will bark at them even after initial friendliness.

Harvey is basically a very well-behaved boy but he does seem to have insecurities that manifest themselves in barking at some strangers — he has never bitten though. We are arranging for a behaviourist to work with his foster carer and we will be happy to continue this arrangement for Harvey’s new owners until they feel confident with Harvey. We are sure that Harvey will be fine with confident, collie-experienced people who use kind training methods.

If you can offer Harvey a permanent home, please refer to our Adoption Procedures for information about the adoption process. You can then contact an Oldies Club rehoming co-ordinator as follows:

Email: rehome@oldies.org.uk
Telephone: 0844 586 8656

He can be rehomed anywhere in the UK, subject to a satisfactory home visit, but note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet im.
