Anxious Poppy - Westie x JRT (Redditch, Worcs)

Poppy is very much her own dog. She’s a 10 year old Jack Russell x Westie who came into our care due to the ill health of her owners. Poppy is now in an Oldies Club foster home in Redditch, Worcestershire, hoping that someone will offer her a very special permanent home.

Around the home: It took Poppy a couple of weeks to settle at her foster home but she does still get very anxious when left, even for a short time, and wants to be with her foster carer all of the time. She is used to having lots of company and the trauma of having to leave her former home will have only served to make her more clingy. She needs a home with someone around virtually all of the time.

Social skills: Poppy hates cats! She is fine with dogs she meets outside the home but she defends her home from other dogs and so needs to be an only one. She doesn’t like boisterous children, so we would prefer her to go to an adult-only home, or a home where children are calm teenagers and very experienced with dogs.

Out and about: Poppy is very good on her lead and enjoys her walks. Her foster carer has found that her recall isn’t good, however her former owner told us that she recalls to a whistle, so perhaps Poppy’s recall could improve if you find the right tune to whistle! Poppy is restless in the car and she doesn’t like to be left alone in the car.



Poppy’s likes: Poppy loves her walks and she also likes to be bathed and brushed. She’s obviously a lady who’s used to a little pampering!

Poppy’s dislikes: Vacuum cleaners.

Poppy’s perfect home: Poppy is extremely anxious about being left alone and so she needs a home where she can have company all of the time – and where she can sleep on the bed with you at night. There is a chance that her anxiety will gradually reduce in the long term, but there is also a chance that it won’t improve.

Health notes: Poppy is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated. She has been vet checked and has no current health problems.

Poppy’s foster carer says: Poppy does what Poppy wants to do, not what you want her to do! She is very stubborn and she doesn’t seem to be a dog that wants fuss. She has separation problems and won’t sleep if she is not with you, so you will need to let her sleep on your bed. If she can’t see you she gets scared and when left alone for only a few minutes she gets very upset and scratches the door to try to get to you.



Poor Poppy seems to have been traumatised by having to leave her former home. The information we were given by her former owners implies that Poppy is a different dog to the one they knew. Therefore, there is a possibility that given lots of time, patience, kindness and understanding, Poppy could be transformed into a happy girl once more.
