River (aka ‘old man river’ because of his big ol’ handsome face) has been living with us for just over three weeks and has settled in brilliantly. River is so enthusiastic and happy – he has the fastest, waggiest tail in the world and sticks his nose into everything he can. In the first week River came to us he instantly became part of the family – he is glued to us around the house and the garden and gets on perfectly with my bitch Buffy (that is to say they happily ignore each other most of the time).

On walks River enjoys meeting other dogs and occasionally plays with them, he is gentle and polite. He mostly ignores other people out on walks, but loves meeting people at home – again he meets them enthusiastically, but gently – this is important as he is a strong dog. He has spent a few hours around two young children and was very well behaved throughout.

River was neutered within a few days of arriving, so he has spent the last two weeks walking mostly on-lead. River may pull at first, but walks quite nicely on the lead. He clearly enjoys off-lead much more, but needs continued training on his recall - After the first few weeks of training he was very good, but has since become quite deaf when some interesting scent catches his nose. He will completely ignore you until he is finished tracking the smell, then he runs around franticly tracking his way back to you. He has always come back or waited to be put back on the lead.

His new owners will need to continue the recall training – but he is so keen to please, so this shouldn’t take too long. River also loves playing – fetch and finding treats hidden around the garden/park (just what his big nose was made for).

River has had a few accidents in the house – I think this was more about marking his territory than the need to go to the toilet (once was on the bed of a visiting dog – naughty River!). He is generally well behaved at home and will settle down calmly once he has been exercised adequately.

While on bed rest he did chew a few items within reach – socks, dog lead and extension lead – but this is the exception rather than the norm. River will need plenty of exercise and stimulation in his new home (he gets approximately 1 hour a day at the moment which is fine). I believe he would settle well into a home with or without another dog. He is quiet at home, he rarely barks, but when he does he has a wonderful deep loud voice.

Overall, River is charming, loyal and loving, he is very confident and easy-going and forms a bond quickly and deeply. He needs an active home, but otherwise would suit most homes - family, couple, single owner, with or without a dog. He can be rehomed anywhere in the UK, subject to a satisfactory home visit, but note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet him. Please put in an application in the first instance if you are interested. Approved applications will be home checked. Details of our adoption procedures and adoption application form are here
