Lady & Tassel - Springer & Collie X - Herts
Lady, above, is a beautiful 13 year old Springer Spaniel lady and Tassel, below, is a pretty (if we may call a boy pretty!) 11 year old Collie X.
Background: Lady and Tassel came into our care after a sad spell in boarding kennels due to a change of circumstances for their previous family. At one point, Lady and Tassel’s future was in doubt, but thanks to the owner of the kennels, they were kept safe until we could offer them a place with the Oldies Club rescue. They are now in an Oldies Club foster home in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, waiting for someone to offer them a new home together.
Took a while to settle: It took Lady and Tassel about 3 weeks to settle at their foster home. Neither of them barked even once the first week. After 2 weeks Lady found her voice (though weak) and Tassel found his at about 3 weeks. Lady adjusted quickest; Tassel is still rather insecure at times. Both of them need lots of reassurance but they are fine to be left alone for a few hours.
Sociable: Lady and Tassel were good with dogs they met in kennels but they haven’t mixed with dogs since arriving at their foster home. We don’t know how they are with cats but they have seen lots of pheasants and horses and they have just had a bark at them. They seem fine with children but Lady does have arthritis which causes her some discomfort and she may defend herself if a child caused her pain. We will therefore only rehome Lady and Tassel to a home where any children are of the older, gentle variety.
Out and about: Lady and Tassel enjoy a couple of walks per day but Lady can’t manage extremely long walks. Lady is fine in the car but Tassel gets very nervous – shaking, whining and pacing constantly. Poor lad must be reminded of a sad journey he has taken in the past.
Lady and Tassel’s favourite pastimes: Sleeping; following their foster carer around; sniffing around the garden and land at their foster home; barking at pheasants and deer.
Lady and Tassel’s dislikes: They are fine to be left at home but they are sad when left. They are very happy when their foster family returns home! Tassel is frightened by shouting. Their foster carer says: Lady is a bit deaf so we need to shout to get her attention, but Tassel doesn’t like yelling – gets nervous and lowers his head.
Lady and Tassel’s perfect home: They would be happiest with someone who is at home most of the time, in a stable environment with lots of reassurance on offer. Lady struggles with stairs, so a home where she doesn’t need to go up or down stairs would be best (even 3 or 4 steps are a challenge to her). Their foster carer says: They are very good company. Usually lay at our feet wherever we are working, whether in the kitchen or in our office.
Health notes: Lady and Tassel are both neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated.
Lady has cataracts but she can see. She has few teeth but can eat dry dog food (the vet said that although she has gum disease, her gums are strong enough with the few teeth she has). She is partially deaf so doesn’t respond to calls but she can hear loud or high pitched noises, such as sneezes. She has arthritis, especially in her front legs, and is taking pain medication as needed. This would need to continue to keep her comfortable. She can’t jump up into the car, and sometimes we lift her up the 4 steps into our TV snug.
Tassel has one cataract but seems to see fine. He has some normal gum disease for his age, and has a few teeth missing. He has a few lumps which will need to be kept an eye on. He has a little trouble with stairs, but not much. He can jump into the car with encouragement. He is still energetic for his age.
Summing up Lady and Tassel:
Lady is a bit of a princess (insistent on her way), but is affectionate, fairly contented and agreeable.
Tassel is a little insecure, good company, very smart (obeys commands and understands), teachable and affectionate.
They both still seem to be a bit insecure. I thing they’d adapt well to a quiet, stable, home with someone there with them most of the time. They have a sweet relationship with each other. It would be nice for them to stay together if possible.
