Handsome Beethoven (Oldies Club) Beethoven_oc

Nine year old Beethoven is a Labrador X Collie who is currently in an Oldies Club foster home in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.

He settled in very quickly and his foster mum says he’s a lovely dog who adores people and just wants to be loved in return.

Beethoven is brilliant with children of all ages and is very gentle and placid with them. He loves getting lots of fuss and attention and would therefore be well suited to a family or busy household.

Beethoven gets on well with other dogs, but he does tend to get over excited when he first meets them. He calms down after the initial greeting, but because he’s also rather strong and pulls on the lead, he will benefit from some further training and will need a fairly strong owner.

Despite this, Beethoven does have good recall – well, when there are no other dogs in sight! In safe areas where he can be let off-lead, he will walk to heel.

Beethoven hasn’t been properly cat tested, but his foster mum says he’s tried to chase one or two cats whilst he’s been out walking.

Beethoven is happy to be left alone for reasonable periods of time and he travels well in the car too. He doesn’t show any interest in toys or playing games, but he does have two pastimes – getting lots of attention and snoring! His only dislike is the vacuum cleaner.

Beethoven is in good health and has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and flea and worm treated.

This gentle, loving, placid and funny boy will make a great companion for some lucky family!

If you are interested in Beethoven, please refer to our Adoption Procedures for information about the adoption process. You can then contact an Oldies Club rehoming co-ordinator as follows:

Email: rehome@oldies.org.uk
Telephone: 0844 586 8656

Beethoven can be rehomed anywhere in the UK, subject to a satisfactory home visit, but note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet him.

Gorgeous Beethoven is in desperate need of a new home. His foster mum will be going back to work shortly and we would rather he go to his forever home rather than be moved on to yet another foster home.

Beethoven has been on the Oldies Club website since 5/7/09 and so this replaces his previous writeup, which was out of date. He’s a lovely lad who doesn’t deserve to have been overlooked, so please enquire about him

Handsome Beethoven (Oldies Club) Beethovenface2

Beethoven is a sweet and obedient 9 year old Labrador x Collie who is in an Oldies Club foster home near St. Albans, Hertfordshire, patiently waiting for someone to offer him a permanent home.

Well-trained: Beethoven’s foster carers tell us he is an absolute gent with very good manners: he even waits to let you through doors and gates first! He is very well trained, responding to all the common dog commands. His sit-and-stay is the most impressive his fosterers have ever seen. He even stays when you have gone out of sight behind a door. How fabulous is that!

Loves people: Beethoven is very affectionate and loves to be around people. He is very good with children too. He’d be best with kids above toddling age as he might accidentally knock a toddler over - he has a sweet nature though and wouldn’t do it intentionally. He also has a tendency to lick and his tongue is at toddler height!

Handsome Beethoven (Oldies Club) Beethovenfriend

Fine with other animals, and bikes: He loves to meet other dogs and will welcome visiting people and dogs. He is OK to be off the lead and interacts well with other dogs and likes them to run around with him for a minute or so before moving on. His foster carer doesn’t know what he would be like with cats but feels that he could be OK with the household moggy after an initial settling in period, depending on the cat of course. He does not chase horses or bicycles and, while showing a mild interest in farm animals, doesn’t seem tempted to chase them.

His foster carers tell us: Beethoven gets a bit anxious if he is on the lead when he meets another dog. We believe that the anxiety is just because he feels at a disadvantage. We have recently been training him with a Gencon collar and this has worked out very well. You would need to continue with this training, which is quite straightforward, if you adopt him. For this reason, we would recommend that he is not regularly walked by a child or a frail elderly person. Apart from that, his behaviour on the lead is impeccable. He will walk very close if required and doesn’t tend to pull.

Excellent in the car: He travels extremely well in the car, even on very long journeys (he went to Scotland for Christmas). In his previous foster home, has also enjoyed a beach holiday and was very good on the beach.

Handsome Beethoven (Oldies Club) Beethovenbeach

Active and loves walks: Beethoven loves his daily walk which is currently an hour or so per day. He is reasonably active on walks spending most of the time sniffing around hedges, but he stays fairly close by and comes bounding back, tail wagging, when called. The only exception is when he is in the process of saying hello to another dog (which is probably true of most dogs). At 9 years old, and being built for comfort not speed, his pace is that of a walk and not a run. He isn’t suited to runs or extended walks.

Good around the house: Amazingly for a Labrador cross, Beethoven is not a food thief. In fact he is fairly fussy about food and picks his way through his meals at a very undoglike pace. He doesn’t bark a lot but will bark when strangers call at the door or if he hears a noise in the garden, exactly what’s needed! He is not noise sensitive, coping well with sudden bangs etc. He is quite sensitive to change and would be best suited to a home where there is a reasonable amount of routine. He can be left home alone for several hours at a time and is not destructive: he seems to just goes to sleep. However, because he is such a sociable dog, it would not be fair to leave him alone for more than about 4 hours on a regular basis.

Beethoven is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated. He has had some medical attention to his ears and now has cleansing drops prescribed. This is administered by the owner/carer and needs to be done about every week or two. Apart from that, he seems to be in excellent health.

His foster cares sum him up: Beethoven is quite a baby and very loving and dependent on his human carers. Whoever becomes his permanent owner will be a very lucky family who will be rewarded with a truly lovely dog, one who returns all their love and affection in full and then some.
