Kya - 14 year old Lurcher (Cornwall)
Kya is a fourteen year old lurcher who is fit, playful and active for her age. She came into the care of the Oldies Club because she had snapped at her owner’s toddlers so is looking for a home with no young children.
Settled in quickly
Kya walked straight into her foster home and seemed immediately happy. She was just a little worried by the presence of some rather assertive cats to start with, but soon got used to them. Kya has been completely clean in her foster home from the first day.
Loves people and a snooze
Kya is quite happy to snooze the day away, but she does love human company, and will be happiest sleeping by your feet. She is fine when left for a few hours. Kya is sometimes just a little wary when first meeting new people, particularly boys, but soon warms up and loves a cuddle or a tummy rub.
In good health & loves her walks
Kya has lovely strong white teeth and eats well with no problems. Apart from a couple of small fatty lumps (which have been checked by a vet and cause her no problems), is in great condition. She is taking glucosamine supplements for mild arthritis but doesn’t need any medication. Her eyes are very slightly cloudy, but she seems to be able to see well enough.
She currently has two walks a day of up to about 45 minutes, and seems to really enjoy them. She will need to keep up regular walking to help her stay fit and active. Although she’s not always the quickest at coming back when called (typical sighthound!) she stays close when walking and is generally very good off lead. Most of the time she wanders along fairly slowly having a good sniff as she goes, but from time to time she will decide to have a bit of fun and rush about.
Kya having a little play!
Kya does find stairs rather hard work, and although she can climb them and will do so (particularly if she thinks you are up to something and she wants to poke her long nose in and investigate!), on the whole, she would rather sleep downstairs.
Kya has been wormed and flea treated, is vaccinated and spayed.
Loves the car
Kya has no problems jumping into a car, and seems to really enjoy car travel. She is no trouble in the car as she is happy to sit nicely and look out of the windows.
Can live with cats and other dogs
Kya is currently in a foster home with two other dogs and six cats. She’s a little cautious of the cats, but has shown no desire to chase them. She seems to enjoy having other dogs about – in fact, she would like to have a little play with the other dogs in her foster home, but so far they haven’t wanted to join in!
Kya is a confident girl who doesn’t let other dogs push her about, so might not be the ideal companion for a very assertive bitch, but she’d be a wonderful friend for a less confident dog, or a confident male dog. Kya’s previous owners tell us that when she previously lived with another dog, she was a little possessive about her food, but she’s not shown this behaviour in her foster home, where she is quite happy to take treats or chews and eat them politely in the same room as the other dogs with no problems.
Needs a home with no children
We are looking for a home for Kya where there are no resident or regularly visiting children under the age of ten. Because Kya is so cute and fuzzy, children do find her attractive, so her new owner should be prepared to protect her from children who may try to rush at her! Kya seems to avoid children if she can, but she should never be put into a situation where she feels she has no option but to warn them off.
Kya’s coat
Kya has quite a long coat when not trimmed, and it tends to mat and also is rather hot. We’d recommend Kya be kept clipped, particularly in the summer, as she seems more comfortable that way and the coat is easier to manage (and feels soft and lovely!).
If you adopt Kya, you’ll find people often ask you what sort of dog she is. Unfortunately, we have no idea! Kya is definitely a lurcher -that is, we are fairly sure she has a sighthound and a herding dog in her ancestry. Beyond that – well, bearded collie, Old English Sheepdog, border collie, greyhound, deerhound, and wolfhound have all been suggested as possible ancestors. Although Kya is quite tall – about the size of a greyhound – she only weighs 26 kilos, so she is quite lean, which at her age is great for keeping active.

If you can offer Kya a permanent home, please refer to our Adoption Procedures for information about the adoption process. You can then contact an Oldies Club rehoming co-ordinator as follows:

Kya can be rehomed anywhere in the UK, subject to a satisfactory home visit, but note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet her.
