Blue is a 10 year old Whippet X who came into Oldies Club care when his owner moved into sheltered accommodation and Blue couldn’t go along. Blue is an absolute poppet of a dog and he’s now in an Oldies Club foster home in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire.

Here’s the nitty gritty about Blue:

Settled quite quickly: It took Blue almost 2 weeks to settle at his foster home. His foster carer says: He has been very good, but did cry and whine a lot to begin with – he still occasionally ‘talks’ when you stop patting him, which is very cute. It is nice to see him more playful now he has settled in he has also started asking for belly rubs too.

Happy to be left a few hours: Blue will snooze for as long as you’re away. He has been left for a few hours and is fine: He sometimes cries a bit as he watches us leaving through the front window, but he is more relaxed now. If the bedroom door is open he will happily make himself comfortable on your bed!

Good with dogs and children: Blue is good with other dogs at the park and was happy to have a 2 year old dog spend the weekend with him, so he could live with another dog. He grumbled when the younger dog went for his toy but nothing more. He is also good with children but if he gets excited he sometimes jumps (for food or his leash or when his foster carers get home). So children who are old enough or confident enough to say “down” would be best. Blue chases cats in the garden so would probably be best in a cat-free home.

Very good on walks and gets excited about car journeys: We were surprisingly able to let him off leash within the first week. His recall is great – we have a few tasty treats for him which he likes to come back for. He pulls a bit on the leash but responds to corrections and doesn’t drag you. He gets excited when we get his coat and leash out and may give the odd bark but he mostly talks with excitement. He will sit for you to put his coat and leash on (while he is talking to you!). Blue loves to go in the car but needs to be restrained or in a crate as he gets very excited and will try to sit on your lap!

Blue’s likes: Affection, walks, snoozing and eating his chew toys.

Blue’s dislikes: He chases garden intruders – birds and cats. He doesn’t mind noise such as the hoover or hairdryer. He was following me around the house when I vacuumed, inspecting every room after I finished.

Blue’s perfect home: Blue could settle into most homes. He would like to be with someone who can give him lots of walks and cuddles. His new owner will have to put food away as he can reach onto the counter tops, although only when nobody is watching!

Health notes: Blue is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated. Blue is in very good shape and still has lots of energy. He has a grass allergy that flares up in the summer but this is straightforward to control with medication.

Foster carer’s summary of Blue: Blue is Affectionate, Playful, Fun and Talkative. He is a pleasure to have. If you call him, he comes to you with his tail wagging in anticipation of being fussed. We tell him to go to his bed when we eat our dinner and he lays down for a snooze. He will also sit and give his paw for a treat. The only times he has barked is if he sees a cat or bird in the garden and sometimes when we get out the leash. He is generally a quiet boy (except for his talking). When the doorbell rings he does not bark, just wanders to the front door to see who has come to visit.

He was not particularly interested in being bathed, however after realising that I wouldn’t let him jump out the bath, after 2 attempts he just sat down and let me wash him. He was well behaved at the vet too.

He is happy to wear his doggie coat (especially now he knows that it means walk time) and he happily lets us wipe his muddy paws when he comes back from a walk at the beach. He has also been perfectly clean in the house. He has short bursts of playing with his toys then he finds his chew and runs to his bed to chew away. He has just started to bring toys to us for tug of war – he has not lost a game yet, he is a strong boy.

We love him he is such a fun and affectionate boy to have around. His cutest feature is his talking!

Doesn’t Blue sound a brilliant little companion?
