Harvey - Black Labrador (Milton Keynes) Harvey2

Harvey is a gorgeous 11 year old Labrador who has come back into Oldies Club care because, amongst other things, he is frightened of crossing bridges. He’s now in a foster home in Milton Keynes and his foster carer has assessed Harvey to determine the things that worry him and is helping him over his fears. He’s now ready to look for his new home once again.

Harvey originally came into Oldies Club care due to a marriage breakdown and he arrived at his original Oldies Club foster home a very upset and confused chap, but his tail was still wagging and he quickly snuggled up for cuddles and reassurance. Harvey is a sensitive boy though and sometimes anxious. His new owners will need to be kind and patient with him.

At home: Harvey quickly settled and was perfectly clean in the house from day one. At night, he settles in his bed downstairs and is quiet throughout, even during the first night. He has obviously been trained to not go upstairs, not to get on furniture and not to enter the kitchen … though he does like to poke his head round the door to see what’s cooking! He waits for permission to eat and takes treats very gently, often dropping them rather than touch fingers. He can be left alone in the house for a few hours with absolutely no problems. At his new foster home he was afraid of the laminate floor at first, but he will now happily go from mat to mat and will carefully brave it without mats if he’s going to get a fuss.

Lovely temperament: Harvey is a quiet, gentle, loving boy who loves everyone and everything. He adores fuss and attention and enjoys being groomed. Harvey knows his commands and will sit and come on command – though he does have selective hearing if he’s got another doggy pal to play with!

Out and about: Harvey is a lively lad and gets very excited about going on his walks, and he walks well on the lead. He does pull with excitement in the beginning but soon settles. His current foster carer only lets him off lead in a secure area as he will dart off to play with other dogs or to explore in the undergrowth. He will need further training so that he knows to stay close by when off the lead.

Good with children, cats and dogs: Harvey gets on great with everyone and everything he meets. He wouldn’t want to live with noisy young children though as he is quite sensitive. He loves being with other dogs and he can live with cats.

Health notes: Harvey is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and flea and worm treated. He has a clean bill of health from the vets and has good eyesight, hearing and strong heart. He has a little stiffness in his back legs after lying down for a while, but no medication is needed and he’s still a lively, energetic dog, though he’s also happy simply to snooze in the sun too.

Harvey’s fears: Harvey was afraid of crossing bridges but his foster carer has gained his trust and he will now cross them with no problems. He’s quite wary at meal times and waits for permission to eat. He’s not a guzzler like most Labs! He’s happy to start eating in a calm, quiet environment, until a biscuit drops out of his mouth and ‘clinks’ back into the bowl which makes him jump a little. Then he just looks around not sure what to do! His foster carer resolves this by holding his bowl for him, then he’s happy to carry on eating. He’s even licking the bowl clean now. Harvey is scared of getting into the car and needs lots of encouragement, but once in he lies quietly on the back seat for the whole journey. At the moment, he will only do the things that scare him for his foster carer, so his new owners will need to be patient and allow him to trust them in his own time.

Foster carer’s summary: Harvey is a joy to have around. I’ve had him for 2 and a half weeks at the time of writing and he’s already improved so much. A committed, patient owner will definitely be able to bring out the potentially fantastic dog he is. We all love Harvey and someone will be so lucky to give him a forever home.

It seems that Harvey has had a strict upbringing and the training he received has stayed with him. When asked to do something that wasn’t allowed in his original home, he becomes very anxious and so he will need patient reassurance to re-train him as necessary.
