Key Points: Very sweet, loving, undemanding, visibly tries to be good, excellent with dogs, good in car, scared of noisy traffic, men, and loud noises.

Dear Tess is an 8 year old ex-racing greyhound lady who could really do with a bit of luck in her life. Despite running a staggering 180 races, she soon found herself unwanted by her trainer and taken in by a kind lady, only to have the resident dogs attack her. So dear Tess is looking for a quieter home where she can learn to relax, be loved on and essentially be an OAP!

Tess has a very endearing, gentle expression, made just a little bit comical by her ears which have a mind of their own! She has a black coat that is getting a healthy gloss to it, and lovely distinguished silvering on her face.



~ Personality ~
Generally: Sweet & affectionate, coming out of herself gradually, timid, learning to trust, very undemanding.
Tess is a very sweet, very quiet lady who asks for so very little. She is quite obviously not used to getting so much attention, so is so grateful for every bit of TLC given to her. She is very undemanding and actively tries to not cause any problems for anyone. She just wants to get along. She is getting more and more affectionate all the time as she learns to relax and trust in people a bit more. This sweetie pie is quiet as a mouse and such good company to have. She provides a gentle and consistent sort of companionship and would be a wonderful dog for an elderly or laid back home.



Sweet Tess has spent many of her 8 years in kennels, and still has things to learn about the big wide world. She can be scared of some things such as loud traffic or bustling crowds of people, and is downright terrified of fireworks and gunshot. She can also be nervous of men, but is very good with children and could live with kids over age 10. She has made huge improvements already though, and just needs to develop trust in her carers. Given time, patience and lots of love, she will improve, but right now she needs a gentle hand and not pushed past what she can currently cope with. As she relaxes more, she is showing an interest in what’s going on around her rather than trying to remove herself from the situation.

~ Medical Issues ~
Like many greyhounds, Tess has a clotting abnormality in her blood and so care needs to be taken for any operations. Her teeth were very bad upon arrival, which means that after her dental she doesn’t have many left. She copes just fine though, and her teeth no longer pose her any problems.



~ In the Home ~
Generally: House savvy, 90% housetrained, excellently behaved, fine with sharing, good with other dogs and people, family and visitors. Very low maintenance, great dog for an older or quiet home.
Tess is in general excellent in her home. She doesn’t counter surf, listens to when asked to do something, doesn’t beg, and is quiet through the night. She can be left with her foster sister for a few hours without problems. She shares her home with another elderly greyhound, and they share their space and belongings very well. Tess is not overly active – she has run enough in her life! As such she would be happier without a young puppy who may constantly ask her to play. But she would be a lovely, sweet companion for a mature dog.

Tess is having a bit of a problem with toileting in that she must be frequently reminded to go outside to toilet. This is possibly because the outside can be very frightening for her. She is well able to and does hold it throughout the night, but will not toilet on walks so must be let straight outside to her garden upon returning, or she may go in the house. Likewise after mealtimes, she must be sent out to toilet or she will become distressed and go inside. This issue does not crop up on a daily basis, and with time it will happen less and less.



~ Other Animals ~
Generally: Excellent with other dogs, not suitable for cats.
Tess is very good with all other dogs. She is calm and quiet, happy to say hi but also happy to ignore and continue on her way. She has no problem with canine friends visiting her house either, and really is such a no-bother girl. She will surely slot right into your home like you always had her.

Tess is not suitable to live with cats, but when she sees one on walks she freezes rather than pulls, so it’s very manageable.

~ Out and About ~
Generally: Likes meeting new people/dogs, frightened of traffic & needs confidence boosting. Walks to heel unless very frightened.
Like most greyhounds, Tess is a very quiet, calm girl and will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week.

Tess travels excellently in the car, but is currently frightened of traffic when outside. She is not yet used to busy roads or bustling streets, and will literally jump with fright. She needs patience and repetition in this area to get her over the hump of fear, but eventually she can learn that nothing will ever harm her. She is fine with meeting new people and dogs when out on her walks, and is excellent in that regard.



~ Where Am I? ~
Tess is currently in a temporary home in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect her.

~ Want To Adopt Me? ~
Tess is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This girl would greatly benefit from being in a foster home, and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always in desperate need of new fosterers. It is such a rewarding experience, and costs are covered by the rescue.

Kerry Greyhounds UK is a voluntary organisation based in Norfolk, England. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between. KGUK operates through a network of volunteers spread over Ireland and the UK. We can look after approximately 30 dogs at any one time in both kennels and foster homes.
