Rescue Back Up
What does this mean?
All animals needing help at RAFA MUST have this in place. We will always do our best to assist with this procedure, contacting rescues as a matter of urgency.
The rescue will secure the animals future for the rest of its natural life. This prevents the animal from being sold on to someone or being taken to the local pounds for example.
The rescue will always take the animal back into its care if circumstances change for the owner. A rescue is a 'safe haven'.
The rescue will neuter, wherever possible, microchip, worm, flea treat, vaccinate etc before being placed into a foster home/new home. All homes are homechecked to ensure its the correct environment for the animal.

The Pound
The Pound is a facility that houses homeless, lost or abandoned animals; primarily dogs
The animal is kept at the Pound until it is either reclaimed by an owner, adopted by a new owner, or placed with a rescue.
Some Pounds euthanize animals that are not adopted within a set period of time, others have a policy of only putting down animals that are in distress due to age or illness.

Adoption
Adoption
Adoption generally means that the responsibility for the animal and costs involved whilst with them is with the adopters. Although in some circumstances rescues will cover certain vets bills maybe if they have rehomed with a pre-existing condition. Say if an animal is quite poorly and it's in it's best interests if it goes to this home as it isn't in a permanent foster home and the home is a good match. Or if the adopters maybe can't afford costly treatment and the rescue would only be paying all of the vets bills if not rehomed anyway so an agreement is reached where the rescue helps financially in some way.

Permanent Foster Home
Permanent Foster Home
Permanent foster home is when an animal is thought to not be particularly re-homeable. So a decision is made that he/she can stay with the foster home forever, providing the family are willing to keep until the end of his/her days. Rescue then covers all vet bills and certain other costs. Whatever is normal agreement where fostering is concerned.

Rescued, Adopted, Bought
Rescued
A rescue organisation took on the responsibility for an animals life and welfare for the rest of its life.
Adopted
An individual went through a rescue organisation to take on ownership for an animal for the rest of it’s life, while still having rescue back up should anything ever happen to break the bond between animal and owner. Illness, loss of job, loss of home, death. The animal will be safe for its natural life.
Bought
An individual pays money to a private individual or pound to take on ownership of an animal. There is usually no rescue back up. Possibly no homecheck would have been carried out. This is where some people pray on the kind hearts of others. Example - People have been known to hand over £100’s or even £1000’s for a sick, disabled dog being kept in awful conditions because they couldn’t just leave the dog there. In 4 months or less that person will rake in more money doing it all again because people always buy them. This will not stop until people stop patronizing such enterprises.

Neutering And Spaying
Neutering and Spaying
Is the removal of an animal's reproductive organ, either all of it or a considerably large part. It is the most drastic surgical procedure with sterilizing purposes. The process is often used in reference to males whereas spaying is often reserved for females. Colloquially, both terms are often referred to as fixing. While technically called castration for males, in male horses, the process is referred to as gelding.

Homecheck/Home Visit
Homecheck/Home Visit
This is a physical check which is carried out on the home/garden and also to vet prospective adoptees, fosterers etc to ensure the environment and the family is suitable for the animal. This check will be undertaken by an experienced volunteer/person. This applies for ALL animals at RAFA. Vet references are not an acceptable way to say a home is suitable.
The homechecker will be ensuring fencing is suitable for said dog, for example etc, or suitable hutches and runs for rabbits.
Rescues have different criteria to follow. Homechecker will always be made aware of what is required/suitable and will fill out a report at the time of visit or will make notes, this will then be forwarded to the rescue at their convenience.
The homechecker is NOT responsible for the final outcome of the report, it's ultimately the rescues decision.

Temperament
Temperament
Temperament is the general attitude an animal displays towards people and other animals; it is the combined inherited and acquired physical and mental traits that influence the animals behavior. Temperament testing evaluates an animals temperament through a series of tests that measure traits including stability, confidence, shyness, friendliness, aggressiveness, protectiveness, prey instincts, play drive, and self-defense instincts and ability to distinguish between threatening and nonthreatening situations.
