SID

**UPDATED: AUGUST 2012**

Sid is a lovely 2 year old lurcher boy who has come to us from another rescue in Ireland. Sid was originally taken out of death row in a local pound, and was very underweight and scared. It is now several months later, and Sid is looking just superb. He is a healthy boy with a beautiful brindle coat and a very striking face.

~ Personality ~
Though physically recovered from his ordeal, Sid still has a few physiological scars that need healing. He has hugely improved during his time spent in the Irish rescue, and became very affectionate with all the rescue staff, but he does remain scared and untrusting of some unfamiliar men. If initially ignored and then approached in a calm, steady way, Sid is good with men and accepts them fine. But if he is approached quickly by an unfamiliar man, or if men shout or move suddenly around him, he will try to bolt. There is no aggression in Sid at all, he is just very scared and tries to run away. If running away is not an option, he will try to avoid the situation and stay very close to his familiar handler. Sid is also currently quite reactive to the environment around him when out on walks. Again, there is no aggression in him, but he does vocalise his frustration or anxiety at being on a lead and unable to meet every dog he sees. He can also be strong on the lead during these periods of excitability.

What Sid needs is a patient, calm but consistent owner who knows that these issues are just the rough edges around a beautiful personality within. Sid can be very affectionate and loving if given the chance to settle and show himself. With steady work and firm but not harsh corrections, and lots of tasty treats, Sid can overcome these issues. Right now he just doesn’t know what is being asked of him, and in fact doesn’t know how to work with people very well. He is a young, clever dog, however, and has strong potential to learn that people won’t hurt him and will even give lovely rewards if he does what is asked of him. Yes this boy has some rough edges that need work, but that will make him shine all the brighter when he finally becomes that well-adjusted, happy-go-lucky lad we all know is possible.

~ In the Home ~
Sid has not yet been in a home environment yet, though we are aiming to get him into a foster home as soon as possible. This boy won’t improve in kennels, he heeds the one-on-one attention that can only come from a loving home. New owners will need to be a bit understanding at the start and give him time to learn the house rules.

~ Other Animals ~
Sid is very good with other dogs when allowed to meet them. He has not shown any aggression with us and is a lovely playful dog when given the chance to socialise offlead. When Sid sees other dogs in the distance, he can get frustrated by the lead as it prevents him from greeting them as he normally would, and this can cause him to pull or vocalise. From a distance this might not look very friendly, but really Sid just wants to be able to say hi. He has not been tested with cats yet.

~ Out and About ~
When out in the ‘real world’ Sid is at his weakest. If surrounded by other dogs, he is significantly calmer and happier, but he will become nervous, frustrated and/or anxious if being walked past dogs or people he can't meet, or if being walked on his own. Sid obviously had a bad start to life and we feel he wasn’t socialised as a young puppy should. However, if you just give him a chance, Sid has tons of potential to improve on this, he just needs to be shown how to deal with these situations.

~ Where Am I? ~
Sid is currently in kennels in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him.

~ Want To Adopt Me? ~
Sid is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This dear boy would benefit so very much from a chance to live in a foster home and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always eager for new foster volunteers. It is an extremely rewarding experience and costs are covered by us.

If you are interested in adopting or fostering Sid, please visit either our website’s Adoption Page: http://s300889640.websitehome.co.uk/uk/adoption.html or Fostering Page: http://s300889640.websitehome.co.uk/uk/Fostering.html for information and instructions on our homing & fostering procedures. If you have any further questions or problems, please feel free to email me (Tam) on tamakin_84@yahoo.co.uk. Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs. Thanks!

~~ KERRY GREYHOUNDS UK ~~

Kerry Greyhounds UK is a small voluntary organisation that is based in Norfolk, England. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between. KGUK operates through a network of volunteers spaced over Ireland and the UK. We can look after approximately 30 dogs at any one time in both kennels and foster homes.

Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, & microchipped before being adopted (unless stated otherwise).
We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in all corners of the UK.

Our Website: http://www.kerrygreyhounds.co.uk

If interested in one of our hounds, please visit our website’s Adoption Page for information and instructions on our homing procedures. Once you have filled in and returned the application form, we will then contact you via phone or email to discuss adopting one of our hounds in more detail.

If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. I (Tam) can be contacted through the following email:

Sid is still looking for his forever home, though his profile has been updated recently. Please see above for the new information. This gorgeous boy just needs an understanding owner who will see past his rough edges and love him for what he is.
