Alfie - JRT (Wiltshire) AlfieTree
Alfie is a very cute 13 year old Jack Russell Terrier boy who is in an Oldies Club foster home in Chippenham, Wiltshire, waiting for someone to offer him a permanent home.

Settled quickly: Alfie settled at his foster home more or less straight away. He just had a couple of weeing accidents at first, so it may take a little while for him to adjust to a new routine in his new home. He is a happy, inquisitive chap but can also be apprehensive, so needs time and encouragement to get to know new people and things.

Can be left a few hours: Alfie’s foster carer tells us: “We are at home most of the time, however I think once settled in his new home he would be OK to leave for a few hours. He doesn’t like sleeping downstairs at night time, but when brought up to the bedroom he sleeps quietly on his bed on the floor.”

OK with dogs and cats: Alfie lived with another dog in his previous home and we understand they ignored each other. He’s been in foster with a calm female dog and has mainly ignored her. With sensible introductions he could live with a calm, laid back dog. You would need to take care at meal times to ensure no jealousy develops. Alfie lived with a cat in his previous home and is currently in foster with several cats. He doesn’t bark at them and will walk past them quietly, however if they were to run away he would chase them, but he isn’t aggressive, it’s more the thrill of the chase. He could live with a dog-savvy cat that would stand its ground.

Good with children: We were told that Alfie has previously lived with young children and was fine. He has met children while out and was happy to be stroked. We would be happy to rehome him with sensible, dog-friendly children of 8 years and over.

Loves walks: Alfie loves his walks and is very active. He pulls on the lead at first but then settles down. He may benefit from being walked on a harness. We were told he had poor recall so he is currently walked on a flex-lead which allows him ample freedom. Alfie is not very interested in treats as an incentive to recall but he does listen when you get his attention and is quite responsive. With training this could be improved, but if something moved quickly and caught his attention he wouldn’t listen!

OK in the car: He appears nervous in the car and shakes a little but he is quiet and takes an interest in things passing by. He isn’t travel sick and may need help getting into the car as it’s a big jump for a little boy.

Alfie’s favourite pastimes: Checking hedgerow bottoms for any interesting smells or wildlife. Being in the company of his people. Chasing anything that moves quickly – this could include vehicles so care is needed near roads.

Alfie’s dislikes: None really. Sometimes a sudden noise nearby will make him jump. He is quite a sensitive chap and things can worry him at first so a new owner would need to take things at Alfie’s pace and use lots of encouragement and reassurance.

Alfie’s perfect home: He would like an active home with someone used to terriers, where he has company for a fair portion of the day and lots of walks. He could live with sensible children of 8 and over and with a dog-savvy cat that wouldn’t run away. He wouldn’t like to be pestered by another dog so careful introductions would be needed and a placid laid-back companion would be best. His new owner will need to be mobile to walk Alfie and also to be able to bend down to put his lead on because Alfie lies on his back as you go to clip the lead onto his collar.

Health notes: Alfie is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated. At his vet check he was found to be in good health except for a small scratch/ulcer on his right eye which is being treated with eye drops. Alfie is a little bit portly and could do with losing some weight but this shouldn’t be difficult with a sensible diet as he is very energetic and loves his walks.

Foster carer’s summary of Alfie: Alfie is alert, affectionate and lively but apprehensive. He is a cracking little dog, a true terrier without being bossy or over the top. He will make someone an excellent companion being affectionate and enjoying outings with his people. Because he is well behaved he can be taken anywhere and mixes with people and dogs alike.

If you can offer Alfie a permanent home, please refer to our Adoption Procedures for information about the adoption process. You can then contact an Oldies Club rehoming co-ordinator as follows:

Email: rehome@oldies.org.uk

He can be rehomed anywhere in the UK, subject to a satisfactory home visit, but note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet him.
