Sam - Active and sweet 17 month ESS x Collie
Beautiful Sam is a 17 month old English Springer Spaniel cross Border Collie in need of an active home where he can get the exercise, mental stimulation and love that he so craves.
Sam is a really wonderful boy but being a mix of two such active breeds it is understandable that he is full of beans and needs plenty of opportunity to use up his energy in a positive way. Sam needs a minimum of 2 hours walking per day plus agility, obedience or flyball classes would be perfect for Sam and we believe he would very much enjoy them.
Sam is great with other dogs and would really love to have another dog in his forever home so he has someone to play with and to show him the ropes.
Sam is also great with children but needs to live with older children only as because he is so active, he can be a little clumsy.
This lovely boy is incredibly affectionate and loves nothing more than a cuddle on the sofa with you but it is very important that his exercise needs are met to keep him the happy boy that we all love so very much.
Sam is on foster in Derby but we home across the UK. He has been neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped.

Sam went for a walk somewhere new today and loved it - no snow now but still lots of chances to play.
He enjoyed the 'chuck-it' game and knows how to give the ball back. He also played beautifully with a couple of other dogs we met, ignored the ducks and the children and didn't mind the mud, although he chose not to swim (can't blame him really, the water was cold)

There has been a lot of interest in Sam, unfortunately not quite the right home for Sam and his particular needs.
We were recently approached by the Fire service who are interested in Sam as a potential to train as a search and rescue dog.
They went to visit Sam a couple of days ago and he has already shown some of the qualities that they are looking for, so he will be going to stay with them next week for 3 days, for them to carry out some tests with him to see if he is suitable for them to train.
If Sam passes and is accepted he would go to live and work with his handler, when he comes to retire he would continue to live with his handler for the rest of his life as a pet.
This is such an opportunity for Sam as it is the ideal life for him, giving him a job to do and a loving home with his handler.
I have seen myself what a wonderful job these dogs do and how they are very much a part of their handlers family and lives as pets when off duty.
If Sam doesn't make the grade then he will return to us and we will continue to look for the right home for him.

Sam came very close to being accepted and passed all of the tests until it came to the nerve strength when, on occasion, he displayed signs of fear/stress. Though at other times he took things in his stride, they were screening him to train as a Disaster Search Dog so he really needs to be ‘bomb proof’. He can’t be spooked by the noises he would hear while working in this kind of environment and he would need to enter areas of darkness and areas of confined space without a second thought in order to conduct a search.
Sam is now back with his fosterers where he is very much loved whilst he waits for his perfect forever home. This needs to be somewhere that is very active and will give him plenty of opportunity to use up his endless energy. Sam needs at least 2 hours worth of walks a day and would also love to take part in a dog activity such as agility, flyball or obedience where he can work his body and his brain.
Sam needs to live with at least one other dog so he has someone to show him the ropes and also so he has a playmate! He is an incredibly lovable boy and loves his cuddles and attention so much that he does not like to be left. This can be improved with time, patience and training but he does need a home where there is someone with him most of the day (whether that is at home or he goes out with you).
Sam needs a home that can really commit to him to give him the active lifestyle, mental stimulation and to continue his training. If you feel you can give this amazing boy the place he deserves then please get in touch and he will forever repay you with cuddles, love and devotion.
